Hikianalia on the left and the Hokule’a on the right, at the Hanalei Pier.

If you’ve been wondering what’s going on at the Hanalei Pier, the Hokule’a and her sister voyaging canoe, Hikianalia, have docked there during part of their Kauai visit.  During the months of May through October, 2013, the two canoes will be sailing throughout our state.

The Hokule’a was built by the Polynesian Voyaging Society.  In the mid seventies, they built a replica of an ancient double-hulled voyaging canoe so they could conduct an experimental voyage from Hawai’i to Tahiti to help answer how ancient Polynesians navigated without instruments and how they quided themselves across the ocean to discover other islands.

You can find out more information about the Hokule’a and the Polynesian Voyaging Society by visiting their web page:  http://hokulea.org/

If you’re down in Hanalei, check them out! Or enjoy the view from our webcam.
