Moon Tides

There she was again – that iridescent full moon.  Whispering to my instincts, waking me up well before dawn, and luring me outside to bask under the glow of her illuminating brilliance.  I’m hypnotized, body buzzing under a love spell – or perhaps a cup of Hawaii’s finest Kona coffee.  Whatever the source, it set me off on a chase to watch her melt into the sea.  I was not alone, for her gravitational force magnetically signals to all who are tuned in, “get thee to the sea”.

Bright eyed and wave starved, today nearly every surfer on the North Shore of Kauai congregated to Hanalei Bay at dawn, reveling in the first bump of swell paired with the full moon overhead.  Even from shore, one could feel relief washing over the bodies and souls of each grateful wave warrior, as they paddle over, under and into this welcomed gift from Mother Nature. They implore to know the wave completely, connecting deeper to the energy barreling toward them.  Scanning the horizon, they spot their line and connect with their breath, allowing anticipation to build until that precise moment when they drop in and feel the exhilaration of gliding across the butter-smooth surface of the wave.   A moment fluid in time, in a state of pure “human being” rather than “human doing”.   For surfers, this is the moment they feel most alive.

The moon and tides have been intimately connected since the dawning of time, where life began to fall in cadence to her rhythmic monthly cycle.  From the ancient days to modern, Hawaii has exemplified this love affair, integrating aspects of surfing into the many layers of culture, community, and family.   Even if you are not a surfer, surfing is respected, along with the warriors in the water as well as their reasons for being there.

Like anticipating the homecoming of a lover from an extended voyage, these warriors wait with bated breath, savoring each small scent of her impending return.  Winter is around the corner – surf season is almost here.
