When mangos are in season in Hawaii it’s as if the fruit goddess has worked overtime!  The trees get loaded with the sweet mango fruits. It’s a great time to explore the island and find some of the wild trees in secret spots or just right on the road in front of you that give the juiciest mangoes all for the taking.  If you have friends or see trees on private properties remember mango etiquette, ask first.

Mangos seem to like the west side of the island, which has more sunny weather unlike the more tropical sides of the island.  The drier west side fosters larger, delicious fruit.  Mango season usually goes from June through October where the farmers markets or local fruit stands offer a variety, with the peak occurring towards the earlier part of the season.  A mango will take about four to five months to fully mature from its first flowering.

Mangos are full of nutrients.  The vitamin content depends upon the variety and maturity of the fruit, when the mango is green the amount of vitamin C is higher, as it ripens the amount of beta carotene (vitamin A) increases.  Mango smoothie anyone?

There are many varieties of mangos and they have different texture and juice content, sweetness and tart.  But no matter what type you try I’m sure you’re going to love them all.  My favorite is the Hayden.  Rich in flavor with a firm flesh due to the fine fibers.  Its color attracts you with its red, green, and yellow exterior.  You can squeeze the mango and if it is soft to the touch it is ready.

Suzi and a delicious Hayden mango!

Take note however that some people maybe allergic to the sap of the mango.  We call this “Mango Itch or Mango rash”.  Don’t let this stop you from enjoying this exotic and lovely fruit, though.  It’s the sap and not the yummy flesh of the fruit inside that you want to be careful with.

Here I’m holding a HUGE mango that I picked in Lawai Valley at one of my listings.  The owners offered this gift to me while we were showing the home yesterday afternoon.  Looks like and feels like this one will be ready in a few days.

We are right in the middle of Mango season so hit your farmers markets or go exploring the island and remember, when you find a good source its always good to share with a friend or two.
