Coldwell Banker Bali Hai Realty, Inc. is proud to offer the serene and spectacular Kealia Kai Estate Subdivision. Located on over 260 acres of majestic ocean bluff frontage and gently sloping terrain, these 34 Estate offerings range from approximately 5 to 9 acres in size. The ability to conceive and construct one’s very own and dramatic tropical oasis is here at Kealia Kai.  Less than a third of the lots remain available and with current market conditions, these offerings are at an exceptional opportunity for the savvy buyer.

Kealia Kai offers an unspoiled and natural coastline, yet is only minutes from so many useful conveniences. The diverse selection of eateries in Old Kapaa Town is just a short coastal bike path ride away. Two major grocery stores are within a ten minute drive, and so is the local Post Office. If the desire to head to the quaint town of Hanalei is on the agenda, it’s less than a thirty minute drive away.

Kealia Kai is a short 25 minute drive from the Lihue airport.  Even with this convenient proximity, Kealia Kai provides that calm feeling of being miles removed from everything. The ocean’s soothing serenade and relaxing breeze will embrace your arrival home.

As exceptional as these offerings are, Kealia and its surrounding area, has always been one of great agricultural significance to Kauai. Ownership within Kealia Kai gives you the choice and opportunity to continue in the tradition of this land…

The rough translation of Kealia is “salt-bed” or “salt-encrusted”.  Kealia got this name due to the flat low-lying shoreline just south of Kealia Kai. The low lying ponds in the area were quite frequently flooded by high surf and high tides. After exposure to the warm tropical sun and evaporation, a layer of sea salt would remain. The natural sea salt of Kealia created its name but the diversity of agriculture in the area goes even further.

Kealia was once home to both farmers and fishermen alike. The abundance of sea-life just offshore and the incredibly fertile soil made for a bountiful combination. After water was masterfully directed through ditches and channels from the local inland mountains, crops began to flourish. Taro was the main crop until the European’s landed in the 1870’s. After which, cotton, rice and pineapples were also farmed. Cattle and dairy farms were in the area, too.

In the late 1860’s sugar cane became the dominant crop with the opening of The Kealia Sugar Plantation. After multiple land acquisitions and ownership changes, the plants continued operation into the early 1900’s. At one point, both Kealia and Kapaa had operating sugar mills, rail systems and depots. The Kealia Mill was sold and moved in 1934. It was masterfully dismantled and transported by rail to its new home in the center of Lihue.  This year it has been scrapped and hence closes another chapter in Kauai’s past.

As the area has played such an important role in Kauai’s agricultural past, it would only make sense for the tradition and importance of this land be kept. The Kealia Kai Subdivision is zoned for agricultural use. This gives the owner the opportunity to utilize a portion of their acreage for the production of fresh produce. Farmers markets are held on the island daily, and the movement for self-sufficiency on Kauai is very large and growing in popularity. Kealia Kai is amazingly well irrigated and still benefits from the frequent inland showers.  Of the lots remaining, water allocation ranges between seven to fifteen thousand gallons per day. If a long term commitment is made to the County to be involved in production of produce, tax advantages can be achieved.

Kealia Kai offers all that is good and beneficial to the mind, the body and to the soul.
