Thundering Watercourses of the Garden Island

Kauai is known for its lush terrain and beautiful beaches, and also for the many spectacular waterfalls dancing down the verdant mountains. Here is a brief description of some of the most impressive waterfalls on the Garden Island.

Waipo‘o Falls—Located in the heart of Waimea Canyon, this 800-foot-high waterfall is reached via a trail that begins between Mile Markers 14 and 15.

The spectacular Manawaiopuna Falls

Manawaiopuna Falls—Also known as “Jurassic Falls” due to its role in the famous Jurassic Park movie, Manawaiopuna Falls plunges 360 feet down the mountain in a lush and remote area of south-central Kauai. The waterfall is located on private land but can be seen on helicopter tours, one of which lands nearby and lets you walk near to the falls.

Wailua Falls—Known worldwide for its cameo appearance at the beginning of the television series Fantasy Island, the 80-foot high Wailua Falls is a scenic attraction enjoyed by many. Look for the rainbows that often appear around the falls providing great photos.

Opaeka‘a Falls—Not far from Wailua Falls on the north fork of the Wailua River is the lacy Opaeka‘a Falls which is best viewed in mid-morning when the sun is just right for taking pictures.

Uluwehi Falls (Secret Falls)—Reached by kayaking up the Wailua River to a landing spot and then hiking to the hidden waterfall, Uluwehi Falls tumbles about 100 feet down the mountain providing a lovely sight.

Ho‘opi‘i Falls—Not far from the town of Kapa‘a, Ho‘opi‘i Falls is reached by just a short hike from the end of Kapahi Road.  A foot trail through the bushes on the left leads to the secluded falls.

Hanakapiai Falls—Located on the Na Pali Coast in Hanakapiai, this spectacular falls is reached via a four-mile hike from Ke‘e Beach.  The first two miles are along the coastal trail to reach the valley of Hanakapiai, and then the next two miles take you up the valley to the multi-tiered waterfall that plunges more than 1,000 feet down the mountain. The last drop is more than 400 feet and falls directly into a large pool that provides a great place for a refreshing dip in the cool water after the arduous hike up the valley.

Kipu Falls—This popular waterfall surrounded by a tall rocky wall is deep and clear. The falls are fed by Huleia Stream which goes on to Nawiliwili Bay.
