Local Energy Cooperative Offers Help to Lower Monthly Bill

In an effort to lower overall electricity use, the Kauai Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC) offers several Energy Efficiency Programs. The goal is to help Kauai residents lower their energy costs while also providing environmental benefits.

Many of these energy management strategies are free or cost relatively little, yet taking some simple steps may significantly reduce monthly electricity consumption. Saving electricity helps the environment and lowers your electric bill, and also helps Kauai become a greener island!

Appliance Meter Service – KIUC lends homeowners a meter for up to seven days to help them identify how much energy is being used by particular appliances so they can help to plan use modifications with the goal of saving energy.

Solar Rebate Program – An $800 rebate incentive is available for replacing electric water heaters with solar water heaters. This rebate may also be granted for replacing old solar water heaters, and for new Kauai home construction.

Solar Loan Program – KIUC provides zero interest five-year loans to members wishing to install a solar hot water heater. This is offered in partnership with the County of Kauai Housing Agency and the Kauai Community Federal Credit Union.

Light Up a Life – In partnership with the Kauai Food Bank, KIUC’s Light Up a Life program gives a free compact fluorescent light bulb to members who drop off a food donation for the Kauai Food Bank at the main KIUC lobby in Lihue during the holiday and spring food drives.

Home Visits – If you are having a hard time figuring out why your Kauai electric bill is so high you can request a home visit by a KIUC Residential Energy Specialist who will try to resolve the issue and identify areas of high electricity consumption. Call them and start with a phone conversation about your energy use and appliances.

Appliance Replacement Program for Low-Income Seniors – For those age sixty and older KIUC offers a program to replace defective hot water heaters and old, inefficient refrigerators (at least 11 years old) with new models. This program is in partnership with the Kauai Community Assistance Agency on Elderly Affairs.
