World Class Golf Highlight of Kauai Vacation

From Poipu Bay on the sunny south shore to Kauai Lagoons Golf Course on the east side to Princeville Resort on the north shore, the Garden Island has some of the most scenic and challenging golf courses to be found anywhere.

With panoramic ocean views and sweeping mountain vistas it is no wonder that Kauai’s golf courses have consistently ranked among the nation’s and world’s top golf courses.

The newly renovated Makai Course, Princeville

Kauai has eight golf courses in a variety of settings, all with fantastic scenery. Most of the courses are right along the coast with spectacular sea views.

All of the courses are designed by prominent and respected golf course architects, including two Kauai golf courses designed by Jack Nicklaus.

Here is an overview of Kauai’s golf courses:

Prince Course at Princeville Resort

With 18-holes set on the ocean bluffs along Kauai’s north shore, the Prince Course is one of the world’s finest golf courses with scenic views, immaculate fairways, and beautifully manicured greens.

The Prince is one of just ten golf courses in the United States to receive a Five Stars rating by readers of Golf Digest as well as being designated “Hawaii’s No. 1 Golf Course.”

With small greens, tight fairways, and frequent tradewinds, the par-72 course has a demanding layout and has also been called one of the United States’ top five most difficult golf courses.

The first hole, one of the toughest in golf, is 448 yards beginning with a downhill drive where the fairway bottlenecks to 25 yards surrounded by heavy rough, and the green has danger on the front and both sides – this course is not for the faint of heart. Call (800) 826-1105 for more information.

Princeville Makai Golf Course – Princeville Resort

Recently renovated with a multi-million dollar makeover, the Makai Course is located on Kauai’s north shore in the Princeville Resort.

Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., the Makai course winds its way through wooded areas and lakes, and also takes in spectacular ocean views including Hanalei Bay and the distant Makana Mountain, popularly known as Bali Hai from its role in the 1957 movie South Pacific.

Four different tee settings are provided on the par-72 Makai course which may play as long as 7,200 yards. The renovation work installed new Seashore Paspalum turf grass on all of the tees, fairways, and greens. Also new is a short-game practice complex, two new practice tees, a practice fairway bunker, teaching tee, and seven target greens with bunkers.

For seventeen straight years the Makai course has been listed as one of America’s Greatest Golf Courses by Golf Digest.

Kiahuna Golf Club – Poipu

Kiahuna Golf Course was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. and hosted the Worldwide Championship of Pro-Am Golf. The scenic 18-hole Poipu golf course was recently renovated and is built around twenty-seven carefully preserved archaeological sites including an ancient village.

Kiahuna is also home to the Joe’s on the Green restaurant and bar overlooking the golf course.

Kukuiolono Golf Course

This lovely par-36, 9-hole course atop a hill in Kalaheo is a public golf course that plays to 2,981 yards. This is a good course for children as there aren’t as many hazards found at other Kauai golf courses, and the fairways are nice and wide. The course opened in 1929, making it the eighth oldest golf course in the state.

In addition to panoramic mountain and ocean views, including a 360 degree view of southwest Kauai, the course features a lovely Japanese Bonsai Garden and also culturally important stones. There is also a clubhouse, small putting green, and driving range.

Wailua Golf Course

Arguably the nation’s finest municipal golf course, Wailua Golf Course is an 18-hole, 6,981 yard course located along the oceanfront on the east shore of Kauai’s “Coconut Coast” providing fabulous oceanside play.

The Wailua Golf Course features well-kept multi-level greens and numerous sand bunkers with landscaping including coconut palms and Norfolk Island pines. The front nine holes are mostly level while the back nine has more changes in elevation.

Wailua Golf Course has hosted three USGA National Championships and has been ranked among the nation’s top public golf courses.

Puakea Golf Course

Located in Lihue on Kauai’s east shore, Puakea Golf Course features ocean views from the very first hole as well as great views of the formidable Haupu Mountain Range.

Designed by renowned golf course architect Robin Nelson, Puakea Golf Course is a 6,954 yard, 18-hole course that winds its way past mountain-fed streams and deep ravines.

A traditional par attempt is always available, yet this course also entices you toward other routes that may pay off with a birdie, if not a bogie!

Poipu Bay Golf Course

Located on the sunny south shore, this 18-hole, par-72 golf course spans the oceanfront near the Hyatt Regency Kauai Resort & Spa. The course was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. and features outstanding ocean views along the cliffs of Poipu Bay.

Often compared to Pebble Beach, Poipu Bay Golf Course has consistently been ranked as one of the top golf courses in Hawaii. Amenities include in-cart satellite navigation including distance to hole and pin placement.

The Poipu Bay course also hosted the PGA Grand Slam of Golf from 1994 to 2006 which included some of the world’s top golfers. Poipu Bay Golf Course will be closed for greens renovation until December 15, 2010.
