Ke Ala Hele Makalae – The Path That Goes by the Coast

There are lots of great places to go biking on Kauai. You can coast from atop Waimea Canyon down the mountain to the sea, or ride a mountain bike on a forest trail in Koke‘e State Park, or on the cane road from Kealia to Anahola, or the dirt roads around Poipu and near Mahaulepu.

However one of the most enjoyable places to go biking—or jogging, walking, or walking your dog—is the oceanside paved path called Ke Ala Hele Makalae Health and Heritage Corridor. The name Ke Ala Hele Makalae means “The Path That Goes by the Coast.”

Ke Ala Hele Makalae is a multi-use biking and walking pathway that currently extends from Kealia Beach to Kapaa on its northern end with another section in Lydgate Park. This path has become quite popular among island residents and future extensions of the route are in the planning stages with the stated goal of a 16-mile path from Anahola to Ahukini near Lihue Airport.

In the few years since the path has been opened the shared use pedestrian and bicycle route’s ease of use and pleasant, scenic qualities following the contours of the coast has proved to be a significant motivator inspiring many Kauai residents as well as visitors to exercise regularly.

Since the biking/walking path is shared by many people there are some Path Etiquette Guidelines developed by the County of Kauai to help ensure everyone’s safety while using this valuable community resource.

Ke Ala Hele Makalae Path Etiquette Guidelines

Be Courteous—All path users should be respectful of other users regardless of their mode of travel, speed, or skill level.

Keep Path Clear—Use no more than one-half of the path when in a group. Move off of the path if you are stopped.

Be Predictable—Travel in a consistent manner. Look behind you before changing position on the path.

Keep Right—Stay to the right side on the path except when passing. Move back or to the right once safely past.

Respect Private Property—Stay on designated paths or roadways. Avoid shortcutting switchbacks.

Signal When Passing—Give a clear warning signal by voice, bell, or horn before you pass.

Yield to Slower Traffic—Cyclists yield to pedestrians. “Wheels yield to Heels.”

Rules for Dogs on the Path

Dog owners are allowed to take their leashed dogs on all parts of the path except a segment running along the coast from the main Lydgate Park entrance (Nalu Road) north toward Hikinaakala Heiau. Dogs must wear a current dog license tag attached to their collar.

Dog owners must be in command of their dogs at all times and may have no more than two dogs on the path. Dog owners must immediately remove their dog from the path if it exhibits aggressive behavior.

Dog owners also must also visibly carry instruments required for the removal and disposal of dog feces, and must pick up and dispose of any feces created by their dogs. Leashes may be no more than six feet long and retractable leashes are not allowed.
